Dreadful idea from day one.

Microsoft seem to be obsessed with sabotaging successful, profitable IP's in favour of trying to take on high-risk projects which are just doomed to fail from the start (I'm also potentially looking at you, Windows 8).

The moral of the story?  Know your market, know your customer and deliver what they want.  I code for a games studio that's at number #1 in the charts right now because it manages to do exactly this, year after year.  Microsoft should know better, however little pocket change Flight cost.

windows 8 already sucks.  all of the updates are based around tablet pcs.....   i see someone with a tablet pc maybe... once every 2 months. tablet pcs where in back in 05-06 now i never see them.... and they better not make a comeback.

I can imagine that if FS11 is brought back to the table realistically, it will be years down the line when Windows 9 approaches.

This and Windows 8 will be an example to Microsoft that this era of experimentation is the wrong idea at the wrong time. The culture around the company this time round is just flawed. Windows 8 will be a mistake in the tradition of their OS's and they will learn from their mistakes before the release of 9.

I will not see a glimmer of hope until then.

In hindsight, what could Microsoft have done differently?

Fixed FSX.

But for Flight - they could have had more content ready for the release and everything else they released should have been fully functional (i.e no external only models) More variety of content too.

Studios often comment that there's just no profitable market for simulation games like Flight Sim.  Here's the thing, though; they're wrong.

If a games studio was to say "alright, we're going to make a new flight simulation from the ground up.  We're going to work with Boeing to create an accurate flight dynamics model and license the CryEngine to make it look absolutely astonishing", I dunno about anyone else but I'd be prepared to pay perhaps as much as 3-figures for it - perhaps £80-£100.

Then, the studio could create a centralised download market for 3rd party addons and take a 5-10% cut of every scenery, aircraft, etc sold on the marketplace.

It doesn't take Sir Alan Sugar to work out that something like this would continue bringing in money for years and years and years to come.  Yes, simulation is a niche market - but it's dominated by enthusiasts who *are* willing to cough up good money for a solid experience.  I've spent probably £500+ on FSX addons, and I know many others have spent a *lot* more.

^^^

When I win the lottery I'll buy the licence and coding off of Microsoft. You have my word.

Now to win the lottery

FSX SP3. Simple really.

Or, what the simmers really wanted if Flight was the only option, Airliners, ATC, the world, some cockpits. They could have not been such dicks about the addon market and locking down the whole thing.

It sort of reminds me of a book I had years ago when I was a child, called Aesops Fables. One story in particular springs to mind.

A Dog, to whom the butcher had thrown a bone, was hurrying home with his prize as fast as he could go. As he crossed a narrow footbridge, he happened to look down and saw himself reflected in the quiet water as if in a mirror. But the greedy Dog thought he saw a real Dog carrying a bone much bigger than his own.

If he had stopped to think he would have known better. But instead of thinking, he dropped his bone and sprang at the Dog in the river, only to find himself swimming for dear life to reach the shore. At last he managed to scramble out, and as he stood sadly thinking about the good bone he had lost, he realized what a stupid Dog he had been.

It is very foolish to be greedy.

Unless X-Plane gets drastically better, Prepar3D starts getting more attention, or a new sim comes out, I'd say FS will be dead in the next 10 years.

Just a prediction, I could end up being wrong.

FS is already starting to die. The nail on the coffin was hammered when ACES got the boot.

It is starting to die, perhaps support wise. But I find the simulation experience itself has just been getting better and better. I departed yesterday from Geneva, heading to LHR in the NGX at dusk. I was just, stunned to put it simply how incredible it looked. With REX, FSDreamTeam, Vatsim, the NGX and a few other addons at work (Shade, ENB Mod etc.) it was just beautiful. With todays computers everything was smooth and it really was a pleasure to fly. Experiences like that keep me going, and I am sure it is the same for others. With the continued efforts of dedicated developers FSX shall continue to improve in my opinion, for the foreseeable future.

It died a long time ago, my friend. It died ever since Microsoft decided to release FSX, which was drowning with performance issues and bugs, many of which weren't resolved. It died because Microsoft released such a crappy version of flight simulator, so crappy that even new hardware technology (many years later) would still fail to efficiently resolve the performance issues. The nail on the coffin, indeed, occurred when ACES was shut down. It also didn't help that AVSIM was hacked just a few months afterwards. A combination of misfortunate events plus poor decision making on behalf of Microsoft have all led to the disastrous end of this series. And with that, let's be perfectly clear about one thing. The series has infact died and the revival that Microsoft wanted to make was an utter failure. It should probably be mentioned in failblog.

Yeah, it only took 10 years for PC's to catch up to the performance demands of FSX. <_<

miscalculations happen in the world of business. if just MS knew that an SP3 for FSX would have payed off more than a new simulator platform

all might not be lost! :)

MS flight was imo the best compromise of all the flight sims I tired, I just needed to be finished

FSX is great, but it's old and not utilizing the latest HW that could make it look much better and play much faster,
Xplane10 I tried only demo, but didn't like it much - visually - the physics is probably much better, but I will never know

http://venturebeat.c...dovetail-games/

I would really like them to continue with MS Flight, since I really think it had great potential,
it needed AI traffic, ATC, and of course the whole world - or at least separate it to regions
they ofc make some mistakes, such as planes with no cockpits - and they shouldn't repeat that

MSX in MS Flight engine and on top of that some updates, would be something I will gladly pay for !!!

but I did like the store in game idea, and all the rest,

I think that flying enthousiat really need something new
for the hardcore simmers and real life pilots, it's probably nowhere near enough , and you will probably prefer the proper simualtion of the flight above all else, .. but there are options for that, such as Prepar3d or Xplane,

but I really do think that something little less serious, but more appealing - visually and with somewhat realistic features,

I think you can see it in racing games too, there are hardcore racing titles, and then there are some that are visually appealing, still serious enough to be enjoyed by hardcore crowd - but accesible enough to newcomers
