Does anyone know how flight simulator creates the world as we see it? How are the ground textures superimposed on the surface to make mountains and various other features? How does it stack the tiles together so that you don't see part of a grassy field cut off and another completely irrelevant texture next to it? Is it somethow possible to create an application that intervenes with the scenery creation process by taking the image that you see in the tile taht it comes in... converting it into a 3D object based on the shades of colours and then changing the underlying structure of the earth and putting the new 3D bitmap or jpg or whatever format the tile sets are in over it? I'm currently assuming that we have an underlying structure/skeleton on top of which all the textures go, and I'm basically suggesting through the textures, editing the underlying world making it 3D. I hope that sort of makes sense.
