I posted this over under the FSX general section but though maybe you scenery geeks don't venture over to the general discussion.  Here is what I asked over there.

______________

Who is the resident expert on generating scenery / airports and incorporating such things into a mesh and landclass in FSX? I have been intrigued by the FSX Planner and the scenery designer by flight1 but I don't even know where to begin and I am having a hard time wrapping my head around how the components all fit together between - mesh, scenery, textures and airports.

If any one has a decent place to start or has a bit of time to explain it to me I would appreciate it. I have looked in the tutorial section of FSW but don't see anything to get me off the ground.

My goal for starters is to make a runway...with a ILS approach...slap it in the middle of the field or the ocean, sit correctly on the mesh and have it show up in the FSX airport directory. I will generate other stuff later but want to learn the basics of each component. Sure, sounds easy right... I am sure it's more complicated than I anticipate or imagine.

I have 'mad skills' with autocad (not AFCAD), Revit and Sketch-up. All of which I don't think is much use; however, the platform for learning the software doesn't look too complicated.

Thanks in advance!

Regards~

Try Sarge - he has a site, CheckSix Design with lots of tutorials, info.

TechnicolourYawn also is pretty skilled. You might be able to hit him up for info.

Start with ONE ascpect, and focus in that before moving on. Rather than trying to grab all the concepts at once.

For instance I am trying to master GMax first, also trying to use LWMViewer to modify landclass, then I'll tackle ground polys and more advanced Vector Poly stuff. Walk then crawl. That kind of thing...

A few other sites I use for learning.

Thanks for the info dewd. I will it all a try.  I agree with the walk before you crawl concept.

Perhaps I should start with the same path that you are taking...  Gmax first and then landclass delopment.
It would be nice to take my local airport...  it's all out of whack.

Well see.  It seems that the learning curve may be a little too steep with out a lot of good tutorials out there....  I will need to check out the sites that you have listed and go from there.

Thanks again-

Bman.

PS - I checked out this site...http://www.scenery.org/tutorials.htm  I think these tutorials have scared me away!  Looks way more complicated then I had imagined. Hmm.

I recently started doing my own scenery design. After much digging I found two tools that are good for creating a simple airfield. First is FSX Planner, its a bit slow but it does allow you to create runways, aprons and taxiways with whatever adornments you want. The second is FSX_XML, which allows you to easily create a flattened and cleared area on which to place your airfield.

Inspired by the latter I've written my own tool KML2FXS, which allows me to use Google Earth to sketch out the runways, taxiways and aprons of an airfield. I then save that as a KML file, use my tool to convert it to a FSX XML file, and then use FSX Planner to fine tune, and deploy the airfield.  My tool is still in the development stage, but if anyone one is intereseted in using it then I'd be happy to finish it and publish it as freeware.

The big problem that I'm now having is that I would like to add a hanger to one of my airfields. I''ve created one using Gmax, but I've no idea what to do next.
