Hey,
Is it possible to paint a plane in .dds format instead of .bmp that all the others are in?
OR is it that the paints/skins are aliased from the model to a set name and thus format?

Only with the FSX SDK...
If you're building for FS9, it does not support .dds and neither does the SDK, so you're limited to .bmp only
