I converted the .dds files in 2 folders – GLOBAL, and NAME (N American East?)

Here's how the “numbers" work - for what its worth…


The “NAME" folder was reduced by 18% - from 125mb to 103mb
- all files that were 342kb were reduced (halved) to 171kb. (125 files in all were reduced)
- no files 171kb or less were reduced in size
- ALL files reduced in size were “specular" files – relating to specific scenery/buildings in large cities.

The “GLOBAL" folder was reduced by 20% - from 564mb to 450mb
- all files larger than 683kb were reduced (halved) to 342kb.
- many, but not all were “specular" files  (not sure about the others)
- additional files smaller than 683kb were also reduced

Based solely on the "types" of files that were "changed in size"...one could venture a guess that the biggest FPS impact would occur in large cities as opposed to rural areas. Most of the files that were reduced appear to be related to the "reflective properties" of scenery/buildings.

The only visual change I noticed that could be considered "negative" was on water reflections. But I haven't spent much time with it yet, and, typically don't fly large cities with tons of autogen.

Can anyone upload the converted files anywhere to save the more "scared" of us breaking anything?

Programme keeps crashing on me, only selected two columns worth even though the tutorial says select only a quarter and it won't even convert them without crashing back to the desktop lol.

Im on vista and DDS Convertor doesn't work with Vista. I've got an XP laptop im trying to do the conversion on, however after the conversion, i had some silly anomolies. The control towers walls where missing.

I Need to do it again, just not had the time.

I agree that someone should make a torrent of these converted files and seed it. Im happy to seed for a while giving everyone a chance to get it. Things like rapidshare are a waste of time.

Think I found the problem, it stopped converting file 27 an 28, AG_AcaciaTree01 and AG_AcaciaTree01_lm. Leave these out it worked for me. Might be something to do with third party re-sized textures I downloaded?

I was getting stuck on the same files, there are some other files that are related to the same tweak i downloaded too later on in the "V's" (vegitation i think) which it also crahes on.

Yeah same here mate, I just skipped those ase there already tweaked for better FPS anyway.

Ive done the same, ive put them into my scenery folder now to give them a try.

This sounds promising but I'm a little scared

Have to say it works I've everything maxed out dipping between 16 - 23 FPS so I bit of fine tuning with the settings and I'm good to go

Just save your scenery folder off, if it boinks you can always repaste. I'm gonna try it now.

don't worry just back up your folder onto your desktop, try it out, if it doesnt work then put them back
