What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

You can help by simply running a piece of software.
Folding@home is a distributed computing project -- people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. Folding@home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.

Yea there has been a issue with the ps3 server. Many people can not connect, or stay connected. They believe its a network issue, and are in the process of switching to a fully dedicated internet connections away from the school's.

Nice, any idea when it's supposed to happen?  It sucks that it can't even connect to download a work unit.

Darn, I was hoping that wouldnt happen.

I'm folding for the FSW team. I forgot I had switched back. My last 5 WUs or so were for the FSW team I believe.

How fast can you crunch through a WU with that 8800GT?

My 8800GTS ( :hrmm: ) takes about 2 hours at stock speeds to complete a WU. About another half an hour until I finish my next WU.

Oh, and I should have mentioned, I plan on trying my GPU OCing again soon so that might help out with WU times, and possibly setting up my dad's old server that we have with XP and running F@H on it. Its only a P4 2.4 GHz ~1.5GB RAM setup, but it all helps. don't forget to add the extra 29 WUs from my family's other old computer we don't use anymore (something fried on the mobo I think, no keyboard or mouse and possibly other equipment would work with it, and the stuff that was hooked up worked on my computer.)

Nice, and sorry for mixing up the graphic cards! :hrmm:  Like I said before, get a program that will allow you to adjust shader speeds because the shader speed is what will really improve performance on WU's.  To get the highest shader clock speed possible you have to keep your Core and Memory at around stock settings.  You'll notice a nice improvement if you kick the shaders up a couple hundred Mhz.

I can't wait to start folding on my new system...just at a point where I can't spend anymore money on the parts that I still need because I've got my car and bike to pay first.  Frustrating!

Some are mine, others are family or friends.

Gonna look into a deployment for the entire domain I maintain at a company. 32 PCs & 3 Servers.

That should bump the WU.  :hrmm:
