Yes they have gone in that direction in combining running applications with pinned ones. It doesn't really work the same way though. It's still in essence a taskbar.
The taskbar has one shortcoming though. I just wish running applications would swoop to the left among other running applications upon launch, it would make the whole "jumble of running/pinned icons" mess a bit better.
Public beta should be available to download soon. The link is up, but servers way too busy.

Swooping to left, interesting. Well, they are reading feedback that's submitted through the OS.

EDIT: now when I go to the link, the page only says: "Windows 7 Beta coming soon!" When I try it from the Chinese site and hit go, it goes to a MS page and gets an Error 404.

The download/keys were pulled already Bobby, I don't think anyone actually got their keys yet. Technet preview website now says Beta is "coming soon"

Cool...I do alot of MySQL/Oracle stuff myself, mainly with PHP and some Java. Alot of command line stuff as of late since I'm writing tools. Getting into C# a bit now there, I originally started with VB and C++, C# is a funny amalgamation of the two... lol. I remember getting XP and stuff off of MSDN when I was about 15 (im 22 now) from where I used to work then... I always find the guy with the "keys" to the vault I remember the CD's too.. the huge binders with EVERY product in 'em.. good times
Beta was pulled for now until they can add more servers to the mix. They got hammered pretty hard
