This is a quick tutorial for blocking websites in Windows and OSX.

Windows

Go to C:Windows\system32\drivers\etc, and open the file titled Hosts in Notepad. Go to the first free line, and enter:

127.0.0.1 www.smouch.net
127.0.0.1 smouch.net

It should look something like this:

Save the file. Now, open any web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc), and try going to: http://smouch.net/lol You should get an error message similar to this:

If you want to block other sites, just add more lines, but instead of smouch.net and www.smouch.net, use flightsimhq.com and www.flightsimhq.com (for example). This will block all parts of www.flightsimhq.com, such as www.flightsimhq.com/forums, etc.

OSX

Open the Terminal application, and enter this command:

sudo /usr/bin/pico /etc/hosts

Hit enter, and you will need to type your password in.

Now, press the down arrow key until you're under all the other text, and enter this:

127.0.0.1 www.smouch.net
127.0.0.1 smouch.net

It should now look like this:

Press Command+Up Arrow+Enter to save, and exit Terminal.

Now, open any browser and test it out! http://smouch.net/lol You should get an error similar to this:

If you want to block other sites, just add more lines, but instead of smouch.net and www.smouch.net, use flightsimhq.com and www.flightsimhq.com (for example). This will block all parts of www.flightsimhq.com, such as www.flightsimhq.com/forums, etc.

Hope someone finds this guide useful. :hrmm:

Good stuff. I usually just follow the strategy that if something sounds too good to be true it always is. Keeping that in mind, you can usually prevent it 9 times out of 10. Example. Flight Sim XI confirmed in press release!!!!*

*Now are you really gonna fall for that?

That is a different kind of tutorial.

I like this one better, as it works on all internet browsers installed on the computer, Mac or PC (Safari, Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome), and can be used to block other sites.

I tried yours, and the plugins didn't work properly and only caused massive problems with other webpages.

Thanks for the tutorial. This is very useful since those sites are very annoying. Its not like youtube where you have a laugh and then simply close the window. Those Rick Roll specific sites are a different league. :hrmm:

Remember when Rick Astley sang live during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and literally Rick-Rolled the entire country? YouTube:

That was epic, and there was no avoiding it.

If you've never been to the smouch.net website, then you shouldn't be saying that :hrmm:

Its useful when youre in a working environment and the last thing youre expecting is to get rick-rolled in one of those annoying sites that basically makes it impossible to close the window. Itll embarrass you and possibly get you in trouble as well, so the tutorial is useful.

It's harder when it's a work computer and you can't edit anything in the Windows folder.

Well, yeah.

I tried to apply this tweak as a joke to one of the my school's computer. I planned on blocking Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask.com, and some websites we use for class. :hrmm: Unfortunately, I needed administrator permission.

Doesn't block ones on YouTube unfortunately, but it's a great trick to know. Thanks.
Heh, I can block all prank websites now.
