If you're going to get an Nvidia card, then I'd get the GTX 275. It's almost on par with the GTX 285, but much cheaper. For ATI, go with what the others are saying.
Also, did you ground yourself before/during the building process (touching a metal object for a few seconds to remove all static electricity from you)?
