I skimmed over the article, where about does it say it's going to be a browserbased game? I don't see it.

Right at the beginning of the article.

...what does it mean browser-based and why it would be bad?

Maybe they were just talking out of their behind. I don't think Flight will be browserbased, they probably mean't something else and used a poor term. (like perhaps using a browser to view your stats on Live?)

It means you would play it inside of an internet browser, like Runescape.

I doubt it will be browser based, but if it is, you can count me out.

If this, or anything else for that matter, is another major retarded screw-up for MS Flight, I'm hopping over to X-Plane.

Browser based games aren't all bad....Battlefield Heros is browser based...Combat Arms is browser based...as in your launch them from a browser but it's full screen.

It's very likely they are referring to a similar method to steam.  Where you can download and choose games directly from their browser.

Uhh...

I think you guys are reading it wrong. And I think GameSpy needs to learn what browser-based means.

I believe the article is referring to how games interact with social networking and online play. Not browser-based.

Quote

In an interview with VG247, Microsoft reiterated the two social games are just the beginning of the company's PC plans.
Social-based, as in "social networking-based".

Also, Microsoft went on to say...

Quote

Asked if Microsoft still planned to cater for those that spend large sums of money to upgrade PC rigs for games, Luehmann confirmed the company is staying with the core.
Microsoft Flight is beginning to sound like FSX all over again, to be honest.

Yea it might sound like FSX, but MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, It'll be stable.

Sure let it require a monster rig, but all I ask for is that I don't have to TWEAK :hrmm:! I just want to click "MS FLIGHT" and FLY

Yeah and I'm going to listen to what gamespy has to say. Seriously do these guys even know what Flight Simulator is apart from the occasional reviews they have to do once every decade about this franchise? I won't take their word for it cause as pwn pointed out:

1. I doubt they even got the definitions right.
2. They probably meant it's more interactive/social than past titles.
3. They might have even meant that there is a browser/simplified version for those who can't afford the real one.

Maybe just maybe Microsoft Flight will be offered as a game or browser-based for those who wish either one. Like now you can play browser-based FIFA game, called FIFA online, on the PC. Or you can play the proper FIFA game as well.

Perhaps by browser they could've also meant a game where you can have the window appear so you can minimize it and browse other stuff while playing the game.

They could've meant a million things.

If Microsoft didn't say it's 'browser-based' by proper definitions then I'm not going to worry just yet.

I'd imagine it to be kind of like runescape where when a plane talks to ATC, the text momentarily appears above it.
You would also gain XP by flying, someone who puts his plane to cruise for 12 hours and then goes away from the computer would be a power-leveler, and you would do quests by talking to dispatch.

:hrmm:

I don't think that would ever work.

Anyways, I think the concept of the program keeping track of our flying hours (real flying hours, which would exclude things like buzzing around in the Extra for 10 minutes and then nose diving into the ground) and all the different routed we've flown on (think of Google Maps or Google Earth wih lines representing all your flown routes crisscrossing around the globe)  would be very interesting.

That map thing would be very neat. :hrmm:
