That's right gents, AMD is getting ready to release its new, 2nd Generation DX11 graphic cards.  These cards are a refresh of the HD 5000 series, promising to bring better performance per watt, newer Anti-Aliasing & Tessellation features.

Some info -

EDIT: Rumoured Prices as follows,
HD 6870 1GB GDRR5 - $249
HD 6850 1GB GDDR5 - $199
^^ These are rumoured prices floating around on the internet, not confirmed by AMD.

AMD/ATI have redone their naming scheme!  Codenamed "Barts", The HD 6800 is now the new "5700" while the 6900 series will be reserved for the high-end enthusiast products.  Don't let this fool you, the new HD 6870 is said to perform about equal to the HD 5850 while using less shaders, HD6000 efficiency definitely seems to have gone up.  HD 6870 features 1120 Stream Processors, and 960 on the HD 5850 (said to outperform the GTX 460).

Here's a couple slides of info I've managed to grab from all over the interwebs  :hrmm:

While "Barts" looks very promising and attractive, think about what AMD has in store with their "Cayman" GPU's.  These will be the new HD 6900 series, possibly offering double performance of the soon to be released HD 6850 & HD 6870.  Unfortunately, the "Cayman" GPU will not be launched this October, but look for it on shelves before years end.

Considering how fast ATI has made a come back..   I'm almost tempted to lean towards a 6900-series when I build a new desktop later this year...

Any word on what the 6900 cards would cost?

I was pricing hardware earlier today and was going to go with a GTX460..   if the 6950 (guessing) is gonna cost around 350 bucks I'll probably go back to ATI..   I haven't had an ATI since...   2002?

Yeah my last ATI card that I ran for a good period of time was the X1950XT 256MB!  No pricing yet on the Cayman GPU, official pricing hasn't even been released for the HD 68xx cards that are getting released on Friday!  Some e-tailers are now showing the 6870 in stock for $279.  I'm guessing that's slightly above the suggested price, but nobody knows for sure at the moment.

Domo - The planned HD 6950 should be more powerful than the HD 5870 and should also be priced below $350 USD.

I'm actually thinking about trying out one of the 6870's if they retail around $250.  Wouldn't mind doing some testing/benching.... :hrmm:

It's a shame all these recent GPUs, from Nvidia and ATI alike, don't perform in FSX as well as they should. :hrmm:

Care to explain how you came to that conclusion?  I've tried out the GTX 460 768MB and it ran FSX maxed out with the specs in my sig; everything ran like butter (no tweaks besides SP1).

I can setup a test fund if you guys want. You can donate, and we can test it on my rig. It's better than one person buying it and finding it's crap.

I mean 20 people donate $10, and we've got a test going.

Or we should do it for somebody else, just saying I'd be up for it.

Wasn't Nvidia the primary choice for Flight Simmers due to so many problems with AA and AF, and when you had squawk box running on top of the sim and such, is all this worked out?

The ATI's mainly struggled with their HD4000 series of cards.  Most the performance & AA issues have been sorted out with their newer cards.  Although I must admit, I never once had an issue with my HD4850 512MB I once had.

The main reason I am going to try the 6850 is to see how their new technology called "Morphological AA" works out in FSX.  Supposedly when enabled, this lets you use higher AA levels (possibly 16x) while seeing a much smaller hit on performance from before.  I'm hoping this new technology from AMD could take care of the jaggies that still show in the sim even when 8xQ AA is enabled.  I miss my FS2004 rig back in the day; there were absolutely no jaggies and it ran the sim near maxed out.  Haven't ever had FSX that nice yet...

Also a 4000 series owner here, more specifically the HD4870 1GB. Never had an issue once.
