Discovery is the oldest shuttle in the fleet, it'll be a sad day when she lands for the last time.

Sad, yes, but after 30 years of doing what was once thought impossible, I think she's ready for a well-deserved rest.

Yep, the whole Constellation/Orion project was for man to return to the moon in the early stages, but SOMEONE -cough-Obama-cough- cancelled it.

via Wired:

"The predicted cost of going to Mars: ~$145 Billion. The cost of the Iraq war thus far: ~$739 Billion."

The war in Iraq has nothing to do with this thread, nor does that inflammatory article. Reported.

I fail to see why a factual event, in your infinite wisdom, manages to violate the General Forum Rules. Is it fair to say that the written context of "World War II" or "Vietnam" violate the forum rules? The article is far from inflammatory. I'd be surprised if you even much as opened the link.

If you scroll up the page, you'll observe that the only post in this thread referencing a politician was in fact yours.

In summary,
1) You are not a moderator. Please stop pretending you are one.
2) Realize the hypocricy of your words

I know the impact of my statement is on-par with that of talking to a brick wall, however, a solid public shaming might get the point across.

Because someone mentioned wanting to see a moon landing, and I was stating it was on the books, but canceled. :hrmm:

Oh, I opened the link, and noticed how, by some incredible coincidence, right after the part you drew people's attention to, it stated.....

Quote

(“The contrasts are stark: $145 billion to conquer an entire planet, vs a trillion dollars to fight a war which has accomplished nothing except to sew destruction, kill and maim a lot of innocent people, and enrich the few.")

That has no place in this thread, none, nada, zip, zilch. And knowing your attitude, that was what you wanted people to see.

Scram.

I could spend all night composing a reply to your highly compelling statements. However, refuting your claims is not even worth the price of powering my laptop.

Then that makes things a good deal easier for the both of us.  :hrmm:

Back to the topic at hand, which is Discovery's final flight, and NOT the cost of going to Mars versus the cost of Iraq.

Probably the official viewing area by the countdown clock

That isn't really useful advice, unless you're a family member. Good luck getting there.

Actually, people who buy tickets can view it from there, so, yes, it is useful, newb. :hrmm:

At Kennedy Space Center, you can witness first-hand a towering Space Shuttle or rocket blast into the sky from the closest possible public viewing area.
A limited number of special launch day tickets and launch day packages are available several weeks prior to each launch. Launch day packages can include a variety of options for touring, viewing and even dining with an astronaut.

Having been to the KSC on several occasions, I can promise you that these tickets sell out virtually immediately. The launch is 5 days away. The thought of any tickets being available by NASA is laughable at best.

That and the fact its packed as :hrmm:. Just find a spot across the river in Titusville, or hit up Coco Beach. Titusville is a bit closer than Coco, but you can actually watch it from the beach at the latter.
