That's awesome! What did you use to strap the camera on?

There is a little footplate on the strut, just zip-tied it on to that :hrmm: very high tech

What camera did you use for this? Is the timelapse thing a setting on the camera or what?

It's a good film - pity the area ain't so scenic! It's definately something I'll be trying when I get my mountain flying ticket.

Be careful, it requires a bunch of paperwork and a sign off from a mechanic if you do it properly. If you don't follow the right steps you could get in trouble.

Even if you own the airplane?  Or is that just if you are renting it.

Owning or renting, technically you modifying it the outside of the aircraft.  Now since it was only a zip tie I'm not 100% sure its the same, but I know when I was looking to do something similar with a Gopro it would have been a huge deal.

It's not an airworthy item. Your flight school was just being a pain in the butt.

You beat me to the post. That was the first thing I thought of when I saw "tied a camera to the strut"  :hrmm:

We have a few airplanes with our flying club equipped for photo flights, and they have holes in the bottom of the aircraft for cameras. My grandmother actually has two photos from a plane that flew directly over her house taking pictures while she was in the front yard. Not sure if they're from the same fleet, but likely.

It's not a flight school problem, but physically fastening a camera to the exterior of an aircraft has to be written off by a mechanic.

... Just enjoy the video, don't worry about worthless rules...

Every good normal pilot knows, that putting a small camera with tie raps on the strut will not effect it... It would be different if you do it with bigger planes... So what's the deal, just enjoy it.

Coming from an airline pilot, that's a concerning statement  :hrmm:

You think? You go on and worry about someone mounting a small camera to a 450kg airplane, while I think about the more important stuff... Please enjoy your day looking up the FAR's as a hobby finding every bit of rule so you can nail Kestrel.
