So finally we've figured out the true specs of AMD's upcoming 7800 series graphic cards. What amazes me the most is how much performance these cards put out while using such little power. Remember that this is the mid-field so don't expect revolutionary new performance increases over last gen's high-end cards. I myself can't wait to get my hands on a 7870. If some aftermarket vendors decide to install a second 6-pin power for the 7850 that might actually be the card to get. The thing holding the 7850 back is the single 6-pin power source, which severely limits this cards overclocking capabilities. I've already read some independent testers have pushed over 1400MHz out of the 7870, but the 7850 is topping out around 1100MHz due to power limitations. Anyway, have a look for yourself.
HD 7850 - $250 - Available ~ 19th March
HD 7870 - $350 - Available ~ 19th March
Keep in mind that's at the cards stock clocks!

Unfortunately the price for the 7870 is a bit high for a mid-range card but we can thank Nvidia for having none of their Kepler cards out yet. Then again, $350 gives you a card that can easily surpass GTX 580 performance so in a way it's not all that bad. I'm sure the prices will drop a bit once they release Kepler. But you can't deny the fact that these new cards are extremely efficient and do have some nice new technology which is always welcome. The overclocking capabilities of the 7870 are just insane.

What's that ASUS Mars II?
I need to upgrade something - really want a 2600k and another GPU - two of those 7870s look promising.
Need to upgrade MoBo and case first though.

The ASUS Mars II is a single card that features two GTX 580 chips and 3GB GDDR5 with an absolutely out of this world price-tag.

Am i right in thinking that FSX doesnt support the use of Crossfire or SLI so therefore no benefits would be gained from purchasing another card (unless you do other games).
I considered buying a second 7970 but at almost £500 each I thought twice after find out this nugget of information.

From everything that's been talked about, FSX does not take advantage of SLI nor Crossfire. Better off purchasing a fast single-GPU like you did.

so basically the performance on these cards is nothing too stellar?
I mean the GTX 580 still seems like a great choice.

The 7800 series is the mid-field for AMD so for these cards to outperform a 580 while using only half the power is pretty impressive to me. These cards replace the 6850 and 6870, in which case they outperform them by a big amount. The 580 is for sure still a very powerful card no doubt, but for the price its selling for it makes no sense to buy one right now. 7870 $350, GTX 580 $450.

I've ordered the 7850 one, and as its more than 1 year after it's released, it's only $200 now. I cannot wait to test it!
