                                                       AVIATION RULE OF THUMB.

CALCULATING THE TRUE AIRSPEED.
> Divide your altitude by 2 and add it to your IAS

FOR EXAMPLE: FL240 @ 175 knot.  240/2 = 120+175 = 295 - TRUE AIRSPEED.

DESCENDING DISTANCE AND RATE OF DESCENT.
> Take your altitude and multiply by 3. That equals your distance in miles to start your descend.

>Now take half your ground speed. This is your rate of descend in hundreds of feet.

FOR EXAMPLE:,
If you are flying at 12000 feet at a GS of 150 knots and you need to descend to 2000 feet, the difference is 10000 feet. Multiply 10*3 = 30 miles out you must begin your descend. Half your GS is 75, add a zero and 750 feet per minute is your RoD.

3 DEGREE GLIDE SLOPE.
> Multiply your GS by 5.FOR EXAMPLE   GS= 110 multiply by 5= 550 feet per minute.

These were the short hands, Hope helped.

Ricky.
