Video Card Overclocking

It seems that we are all itching for better performance out of our video cards these days and for those of us who have caught the overclocking bug I wrote this little tutorial on video card overclocking. :o

*Disclaimer* I take no responsability for any damages caused by the following actions.

What you will need to overclock your card

Ati tool
3DMark2003
Radlinker
Coolbits  (for Nvidia)

Ok lets start.

Go into your video card control panel by:

Right Click on desktop>Settings>Advanced

And go to the tab where you can adjust your video cards clockspeeds.

Ati users should look like this when using the latest Omega drivers, otherwise this section would be under the Radlinker tab
Posted Image

First of all we will concentrate on the Core clockspeed.

Move the slider up slowly 5Mhz then load up Ati Tool and run the 'Scan for Artifacts' test for 2-3mins to make sure there are no errors.

Posted Image

If there aren't any errors then stop the test and go back to Radlinker and increase the core speed by another 5Mhz. Repeat the 'Scan for Artifacts' test in Ati tool once again for another 2-3mins.

Keep on doing the above steps until you get to the point where you will see artifacts on the spinning cube in Ati Tool as little sparklies like in the image below.

Posted Image

When you reach this point clock back your speed in Radlinker until the sparklies dissapear and you run the 'Scan for Artifacts' test error free.

Now click on the 'Set' button and then the 'Use Current' buttons to make sure that setting stays there.

Posted Image

Now repeat the above steps for the Memory clockspeed in Radlinker until you get memory artifacts like in the image below.

Posted Image

Again when you reach this stage clock back down until they dissapear and you run the 'Scan for Artifacts' test error free.

Now click on the 'Set' button and then the 'Use Current' buttons to make sure that setting stays there.

Now you are nearly complete and there is one final step left just to make sure everything is ok, run 3DMark2003 a few times on loop and keep an eye out especially in the 'Nature' test for sparklies on the Turtles back and in the Water, if you get some errors or sparklies you may need to lower the clock speeds back down a bit and then retry again.

If you don't feel satisfied with your overclock, try benchmarking using the 3DMark2003 test used, you'll be surprised at how your score goes up a lot as I scored 900 points higher by using the method here.

If there aren't any spaklies during the running of 3DMark2003 then you have successfully overclocked your card and can give yourself a pat on the back :D
