Supersonic-the next milestone of aviation, as they said.

It all started when Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in a X-1.  Since then, all kinds of planes, mostly military, have been breaking the sound barrier.  The fastest planes of all time are the experimental X-series.

Sonic Booms are shock waves that occur when you enter supersonic, hypersonic, or other high speeds.  In subsonic flight, air in front of you will simply get out of the way by the plane's pointed nose.  In supersonic flight, air cannot get out of the way fast enough, and when the air gets compressed, then the pressure is released, that's a sonic boom.  It rattles windows, seriously.  Concorde supersonic jets (discontinued) were banned from flying over the United States and was forced to have a flight plan in rural Canada.  Why, you ask?  It was because the noise and the shock waves produced by supersonic flight exceeds government regulations.

Hope you learned something about sonic booms.  If you think a supersonic plane is near you, flee to an underground shed  :D

...I don't think that's accurate.

Sonic booms are created by the sound waves and the energy waves overlapping. The energy waves would be like the plane, where as the sound waves are the vibration of atoms and molecules in the air. When they rub together, it creates a boom, resulting in the energy trying to take the void's space created by the overlapping of the sound and energy waves.
