I've got this handly little pamphlet for spotting that makes it so you can very easily spot correctly the various airliners. However, I'm having trouble, it doesn't differenciate between these three aircraft. So is there a way I can visually decifer if it's A319,320 or 321? Thanks

I've got all the other planes down, but when surfing a.net and trying to determine the plane, these are the ones where I might say "oh it's a 320" but it's a 319.

Or am I just completely off, and it's all the same aircraft, just different versions. Just like the 737 classic, vs 737 next generations? Meaning, a 319 is original aircraft, but the 320 is just upgraded, and 321 even more so

I think the a319 is the shortest, with the a320 being longer, and the a321 being longer than that. I'm not sure.

They are essentially derivatives... the A320 being the standard design, the A319 has some fuselage frames removed and the A321 is a stretched version  of the A320 with the addition of some fuselage frames.

hrm, alright. So basically look at the length of the aircraft and decide from there?

And thanks!

Yep. If you see 4 Airbus single-aisle aluminium tubes, you can be sure that the shortest one that looks like a bumblebee is an A318, the one a bit longer is the A319, the one that's slightly bigger is the A320 and the last one invariably is the A321.

The a321 is the ugly, long one, the a320 is the nice, balanced looking one, and the a319 is the stubby looking one.

Also...if you get a closer look

A319: 1 over wing emergency exit on each side

A320: 2 overwing emergency exits on each side

A321: no overwing emergency exits but there is an emergency exit right infront of and right behind the wing

Here is a big tip: the way that I differentiate between the A319 and the A320 is by the wing emergency exits. The A319 has one, and the A320 has two (except for EasyJet which is the only airline that I know of that has two emergency exits on their A319s). The A321 is very different in the fact that it has two full size doors in front of the wing. The A318 is noticeably different because (I'm pretty sure) it has a narrower body than the rest of the A320 family. It's also really really short and stubby.

EDIT: Derin beat me to it.

Forgot the A318

My techniques:

A318 is short and stuby, big wings and big tail

A319 pretty short, about normal wings and tail

A320 not short, smallish wings and tail

A321 about 757 length, small wings and tail

You might also want to consider what airline you are spotting, for example United has A319s & A320s, Frontier has A318s & A319s & heard they wre getting some A320s, etc.

I usually tell by the color of the fire that is engulfing the fuselage.

A318- Dark black
A319-Greyish
A320- White
A321- More of a brown color, because it's a piece of ######.

Man that's gonna offend some Airbus fans!. I kid though, I love Airbus!!.
