Description:
SimPlates 2004, is a collection of 18000 IFR approach plates, SIDs, STARs, and other aviation data aimed at the serious flight sim enthusiast.

An inexpensively priced 2 CD-ROM product (compared to the much more expensive but less coverage Jeppesen SimCharts), this is a stand-alone piece of windows software, though most users typically are FS2002/FS2004 pilots.

The approach plates are ACTUAL approach plates, not hand-drawn approximations as in the old Final Approach product. Virtually every approach plate in the USA is included and there are also thousands of approach plates for 50 other countries. An additional 10,000 or so approach plates are addable via the downloadable "PlatePacks." For example, you can get complete UK, France, or Spain coverage just by downloading the appropriate PlatePack.

Approach plates are charts that pilots use when coming into an airport. If you're flying without approach plates, it's pretty much safe to say that you're flying "any old way." Sure, you'll get down ok, but it's not terribly realistic. the use of approach charts is not easy, but just like anything, view it is a challenge to making your simming experience more fun.

There is a complete description of SimPlates 2004 at the website. There's also a downloadable demo. Have a look!

Pros: Detailed charts and lots of them.
Cons: Detailed charts and lots of them.

When working with charts in the past, I would go to the local airport and pick up the plates for whatever area I was interested in for $5.00 - $7.50 Depending if the charts were new or old. And I would promptly lose them somewhere in the house...

This software not only saves me space and eliminates the need to try to remmember where my absent mind left the plate books, It also has provided me with all the tools I need to go just about anywhere.

I have now saved a couple hundred dollars by not having ot go out and purchase the plates from the not-so-local airfield.

The only difference I have seen between the "store hought" charts and the Simplates charts is the diclaimer that "These charts are intended for Flight Sim use only" other than that they are the genuine article.

I love the cost and the convenience of having all the info I need right at my mouse tips.

And if you happen to be missing a chart or two, you can probably pick it up off the Dauntless web site in one of their foriegn country downloads.

This software rocks.
