Hello, and welcome to my tutorial on how to autoland an aircraft using a NAV frequency!

I decided to make this tutorial after a lot of people asking me how to do it.

For this tutorial you should be confident in flying aircraft and setting NAV radios.

To make this easy, i will base this tutorial at Heathrow. (icao code is EGLL)

First do a flight to Heathrow and get on an approach on runway 9L (or just slew or get there by other means).
When you are correctly on the glideslope, set NAV1 to 110.3 and activate MKR, DME,ADF and of course NAV1. (Normally you would set your NAV radios much much earlier than this)

Also make sure that you have the correct flaps set and speed and fuel/payload etc etc

You must control the speed manually (unless of course you are using autothrottle)

On the autopilot panel, turn on approach, and also turn autopilot itself on.
the plane shall land it self!!!!

just make sure you have correct speed and flaps.

If an aircraft has FMC, you can find out how to program it and use autoland with this tutorial.

Normally you would set your NAV radios long before the approach and also the autoland can land from a further distance away and line you up.

You can use this at any runway that has an ILS beacon.

This tutorial is mainly for bigger aircraft, but still works with smaller aircraft.

(some don't have the approach selection on autopilot, if that is the case you will have to land the plane manually, but there will be aids to help you. There is flight director and some gauges on the aircraft panel itself hat help you land your plane in bad weather or conditions).

I really hope this tutorial help.

I reallllllllly want comments and constructive criticism on how i can improve it,

--thanks

ps. i wrote this at 11PM so sorry about any spelling or punctuation mistakes

Also, this is my first tut

Unfortuantly the FS2004 autoland feature is completely flawed.

It's confusing.

For example, a newbie reading this tutorial would be looking at MKR, DME, ADF for hours totally messing their mind up.

Autoland tut...

Tune ILS in NAV 1. Align ILS, and hit your autopilot button. Hit APP. Not perfect, but it will bring you down to minimums well.

Not rocket science...

You forgot to set the course heading.

FS is not smart enough to realize that, it does not matter as far as I can tell

Ok, I was using your tutorial..

Everything was fine, I took a spin around KSEA, Frez : 110.30 Mhz Heading 341.

ok.. I had added the 110.30 mhz into the NAV1 then activated gave some seconds then activated MKR, DME, ADF..

gave it some time, it had lined up with the airport, but it didn't pull the plane down. I had AP, and APP activated, the plane was still at 3.500, I had passed the runway still at 3.500.

Any ideas on what did I do wrong?

hugo, you didn't put it on APP, on some planes its APR like that ok,

don't matter bout DME it just gives you distances.

you also for got to ADD max ILS approach altitude, which is 4000 to 3000 ALT

ALSO max approach speed should not exceed 160 otherwise the plane or jet will over shoot the ILS beam.

AND if you try to catch the beam past more than 1 mark beyond center the Autopilot will not respond to the App button.

picture #2 shows you are WAY too high above the beam!

if you don't catch the beam inside of 1 mark from center, you missed the ILS.

NAV1 and CRS are really the only thing necessary.

If available I enter the airports VOR/DME and also the ADF frequency if that is available.

true, but fs sometime bugs up, and when i tried withuot doing what i wrote, it didn't work, and you don't need to set CRS on flight simulator
