Around the World 07/08 - leg 018 - Podgorica (Montenegro) - Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina)
21-nov-2007

Unfortunately the pics for this trip are lost.
So just the bare facts:

Only 96 nm to Sarajevo, so we leave early in the morning, to be able to wonder around the old Olympic City (Winter Games 1984).
We push back at 09.15 to taxi to RWY 36.
After take-off we immediately turn on course towards Sarajevo.
Approaching Sarajevo we are vectored to an ILS approach for RWY 12.
We are guided to General Aviation parking (?) and shut down, so we can head into town.

Around the World 07/08 - leg 019 - Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina) - Zagreb (Croatia)
23-nov-2007

With Sarajevo being a war risk zone, we didn't want to spent too much time here.
We decided it was time to leave already so we pushed back at 11.53 (10.53 GMT).
After engine start we were cleared to taxi to runway 12 for our 168 nm trip to Zagreb.
As soon as we were airborne we climbed as quickly as possible to our cruising altitude of 16.000 foot to get out of the danger area.
Zagreb Approach soon gave us vector for an ILS 5 approach.
After setting here down a bit hard, we taxied slowly to gate 3 and shut her down.

Around the World 07/08 - leg 020 - Zagreb (Croatia) - Belgrade (Serbia)
27-nov-2007

After a few nice days in Zagreb we left again towards Belgrade with Budapest (LHBP) as our alternate.
Hope we don't have to divert, since that would seriously screw up the planned route.
We were cleared pushed back at 14.37 (13.37 GMT) and taxi to runway 23.
The trip will onzly be around 190 nm, so no more than 25% of fuel is required, enabling us to climb out fast.
The weather looks great and were popping in and out of the clouds, even at our cruising altitude of FL210.
Getting closer to Belgrade the sun is already getting low, giving the sky all kinds of great looking colors.
I guess I'm a sucker for these sunset shots, so expect lots.
We're cleared for an ILS approach to RWY 30 and set her down licely.
Parked at gate B5 we stand next to some friends we met earlier in Rome.

No, but because most trips are relatively short, I can fly them during my lunch-breaks.

Around the World 07/08 - leg 021 - Belgrade (Serbia) - Bucharest (Romania)
28-nov-2007

Leaving Belgrade today, we will make our next scheduled stop in Bucharest, Romania.
The flightplan ends in LROP (Henri Coandă International Airport) with our alternate being LRBS (Bucharest City Airport).
We push back from gate B5 at 16.46 (15.46 GMT) while the sun is already below the horizon.
We taxi out to runway 30 and wait in line behind a company Learjet.
After take-off we immediately turn towards the northeast to catch up with our flight plan.
After cruising around at FL310 we're guided towards an ILS approach to RWY 26R and land softly.
Taxiing to gate 1 we appreciate the very nice (freeware) scenery and take some extra shots.

Around the World 07/08 - leg 022 - Bucharest (Romania) - Chisinau (Moldova)
30-nov-2007

Since Bucharest is a pretty large airport with all kinds of facilities we decided to get our 25 hours maintenance done here.
Costing us a whopping $626k we decided to let them also fix the minor issues costing us another $6k, but making sure we can fly a lot more hours.
And boy is it a nice day today. Great weather for flying to Chisinau (LUKK).
It's just after 9am and we push back from gate 1 with great looking skies.
After start-up we're cleared to taxi to 08L for immediate departure.
Cruising along at FL210 ATC vectors us all the way to the Black Sea before settings us up for an ILS approach into RWY 26.
The closer we get to Moldova, the colder it becomes, ending up with a completely white (snow) LUKK-airport.
We quickly leave the active and taxi to gate 2 to get some hot beverages.

Around the World 07/08 - leg 023 - Chişinău (Moldova) - Kiev (Ukraine)
06-dec-2007

We decided to enjoy the city of Chişinău, one of the cities with the highest proportion of green spaces of any major city in Europe and decided to stay here for a while (in reality I was just TOO busy to fly )
After about a week it was time to head on towards Kiev. Boryspil International Airport (UKBB) to be exact.
It is Ukraine's largest airport, serving the major part of international flights of the country.
Boryspil Airport is one of three airports that serve Kiev. Zhulyany Airport is a passenger airport located in the south part of Kiev; the airport serves predominantly domestic flights. Gostomel Airport is a cargo airport located in the north-western suburb of Kiev, mostly used by Antonov company.

After a nice calm morning we left the gate at 12.14 and taxied to RWY 08 where we had to hold halfway until all landing aircraft had left the runway and we were cleared to taxi to the beginning of the runway and take off for Kiev.
It was a nice day for flying with nice looking fluffy cumulus clouds beneath us while we cruised at FL330.
Man what a lot of traffic is there in that area.
After just about an hour (13.08) we had landed on runway 18R and taxied into gate M8 and left the aircraft cold and dark for the remainder of the day.

Around the World 07/08 - leg 024 - Kiev (Ukraine) - Budapest (Hungary)
12-dec-2007

Almost a week had passed so it is time to leave Kiev behind us.
Next on the agenda is Ferihegy International Airport in Budapest, Hungary.
In 2005, the airport served just over 8 million passengers.
The airport is located 16 kilometres (10 miles) east-southeast of the centre of Budapest.

After enjoying a great lunch in our hotel we head down to the airfield for our departure towards Budapest.
For this trip Bratislava Airport (LIZB) in Slovakia is our alternate airport.
We leave the gate at 15.17 and taxied to RWY 36R where we can take-off straight away.
This time of year the sun goes down early, so we arrive at budapest in the dark of night.
ATC guides us to runway 13L for an ILS approach, after which ground leads us to gate 31.
At 16.51 we shut down the engines and head for town.

Around the World 07/08 - leg 025 - Budapest (Hungary) - Ljubljana (Slovenia)
14-dec-2007

A few days later and it's time to go on towards Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJLJ).
In 2006, the airport served 1,334,355 passengers, with 40,991 Aircraft movements.
The airport is located near the village of Brnik, approximately 26 km (16.2 mi) north of Ljubljana.

For this trip Klagenfurt (LOWK) in Austria is our alternate airport.
We leave the gate at 09.36 and taxi to RWY 13R.
No other traffic in the neighbourhood so we can take off immediately.
After take off we climb to our initial altitude of 7000'.
After that ATC clears us to 13.000', FL240 and finally to our cruise altitude of FL340.
As the skies were clear we had a great view of the mountainous areas beneath us.
Soon ATC cleared us to descent to FL220 and FL140 after that, preparing us for our arrival into Ljubljana.
We were vectored to RWY 31 for an ILS approach, after which ground leads us to parking W9.
Unfortunately the First Officer, who was the Pilot Flying for this leg, pulled up the nose a bit too much causing a minor tail-strike.
At 10.36 we shut down the engines and head for town.

Around the World 07/08 - leg 025 - Ljubljana (Slovenia) - Vienna (Austria)
19-dec-2007

It's been a few days and we are ready to leave Ljubljana behind us.
Next on the agenda is Vienna, Austria (LOWW) which is located 18 kilometers (11 miles) southeast of Vienna, is the busiest and biggest airport in Austria. It is often referred to as Schwechat, the name of the nearby town.

Milan Rastislav Štefαnik Airport (LZIB) in Slovakia will be our alternate airport for this trip.
At 16.15 we leave the gate and taxi to RWY 31 where we are 2nd to depart behind a Easyjet A319.
After reaching our cleared altitude of 7.000' we can climb further to FL150, FL210, FL290 and eventually to our cruising altitude of FL330.
Upon reaching the Vienna area, ATC vectors us North for a ILS RWY 34 approach with a very smooth landing.
At 17.19 we shut down the engines at gate 6.
