Isn't AVSIM where the Project Opensky planes are downloaded from? :hrmm:

No, 90% of our aircraft are hosted on our own servers.  The rest are in the process of being put on our servers to be 100% independent.

If they really lost all data, I see the end day of FS9 coming very soon.

To early to say such a thing

I hope you are right, I surly don't want to see this since I am still using FS9.
and I really don't understand why ppl did that...I don't see any good for the hacker(s).

No F :hrmm: ing way, surely they had a backup. Hope so.

It says in the new forum that they backed up the file library to their webserver and the webserver stuff to the file server on a daily basis, so that they would be good if one or the other server went out of comission... but both servers were taken down in the attack, all partitions removed. The data may still be there in physical form but the backups are gone for now.  ;)

Whoever did this must be very proud of himself now... way to go picking on a freeware service.  :hrmm:

I hope they realize that they also effected support forums from various companies such as PMDG, FS2Crew, Radar Contact, etc. I can't fathom any possible enjoyment the yahoo(s) received from doing this but I hope they get caught before they effect more communities.

Us typing about it and other forums talking about it is exactly how they get their kicks! wouldn't be surprised if the culprit has an account here and on other forums. Sadly i very much doubt they will ever be caught let alone prosecuted :hrmm:

Wrong.

As long as the uploader keeps Allow mirroring in the upload process the file will be uploaded to FlightSim.com so go and search there.

Thats just a spamming thing, not the actual cause of a crash...crashing the servers won't happen from sending out spam mail.

The days of free 500kb/sec+ downloads are done....

I guess using Flightsim.com and Simviation at "a perfectly reasonable" 30kb/sec works fine, too.

Thank you for the amazing run, AVSIM.  I've been a member since the days they were an online magazine.

Did a search and didn't see anything, figured I d post this...
Folks,

Today, AVSIM was destroyed by a hacker. Both of our primary servers were hacked and the partition tables destroyed, and that will be very difficult to overcome. I won't speculate on who did it, but we will have a forensic done on our disks and scrutinize the logs to validate our suspicions.

I would appreciate if you could post the following as a news item or announcement on your websites or forums. Nels and Francois, I know we have been competitors, but I would very much appreciate you posting this on your web sites, if you could.

PRESS RELEASE: AVSIM Hacked!!

Tom Allensworth, CEO and Publisher of AVSIM, today issued the following announcement; “We regret to inform the flight simulation community that on Tuesday, May 12, AVSIM was hacked and effectively destroyed. The method of the hack makes recovery difficult, if not impossible, to recover from. Both servers, that is the library / email and web site / forum servers were attacked. AVSIM is totally offline at this time and we expect to be so for some time to come. We are not able to predict when we will be back online, if we can come back at all. We will post more news as we are able to in the coming days and weeks. END

Best Regards,
Tom Allensworth

I think a hacker-bashing is in order. The sooner we find the  :hrmm: the quicker we can give him a good :hrmm:

This is just such a disgraceful act towards a FREE highly dedicated flightsim community.

May i add -

im not up to scratch with online rules, is this illegal ?

I actually believe it is a federal offense, at least in some countries, I'm not exactly sure about the U.S. but I think it is illegal. However do to the nature of computers and the difficulty of tracking hackers on certain occasions the government doesn't do much, but they try. If Avsim could figure out who did it then they could possibly press charges on the basis of a cyber crime, but I'm not saying they will. It is sad that some low life would do such a thing.    :hrmm:
