Could have sworn all the non-FOX News reports said it was a firecracker.

Yea, CNN reports it as a firecracker:

That was a few hours ago, however. Has this been confirmed?

I'm seeing photos of a Bomb Disposal Unit entering the aircraft at DTW. That sounds much more serious than a firecracker.

Hm, not sure. I've posted the CNN and FOX links into the original post though. Gonna see if there are other sources.

Precaution maybe?

Hard to say - the police response would have been based on what the crew reported. In your normal every day passenger disturbance (eg "air rage") it is usually the regular officers/airport unit that responds.

The suspect is allegedly in hospital with 3rd degree burns.

Firecracker? That's unusually light for Al Qaida.

I heard on the news over here that it was a firecracker on a Delta Flight A330 from Amsterdam as it was coming into land

AP reports it was an explosive device as well. Not a firecracker.

Ah :hrmm:...just what we need, a bunch of paranoid, delusional travellers who think that the skies are unsafe during the busiest travel time of the year. I can hear the politicians coming.

Though, it did seem pretty lame. You'd think he'd at least read up on the correct contact sensitive primary explosives before actually attempting such a feat. Idiot.

Sounds fishy when the media contradicts each other. One "unnamed government source" claims it was a self-admitted Al-Qaeda attack when others say it wasn't. Funny how they can interrogate the guy in the hospital immediately after the event, then forward said confession to everyone in the government and on to the media. All in the span of a few hours.

I guess the scoop isn't as juicy if Al-Qaeda isn't involved.

Anyways, on to Afghanistan, folks.

I think he is a wannabe, but he is on the "government no fly list" does that really exist? And why was he allowed to fly then?

It wasn't a firecracker. The report I read noted that the device sounded like a firecracker and blew off some smoke. My initial guess is that it was a firecracker, or the idiot had several strapped on himself.

He was on the CIA/FBI "watch list" but he was not on the "no fly list".   If he is dangerous enough to be on a watch list you would think they should have him on the no fly list aswell.

Seems like he had some liquid pack strapped to his upper leg (doesnt show on xray machine) and then some sort of injection to ignite it.  There was a pop as it ignited and then he suffered 3rd degree burns.

Its pretty worrying the fact that he walked onto the plane with some sort of explosive liquid.  I just came from amsterdam a couple days ago.  I was just pointing out to my wife that we walked into the departure gate, the xray machine was off, then 30 mins before boarding, the staff came, we had to go back out, then they searched the room, switched on the xrays and we went back in.  It was a very thourough search they done, bins emptied, plants checked etc but still, if you had a gun, you had a couple of hours to hide it somewhere in the room!
