Where are you getting 50k from?  :hrmm:

Anyways don't worry about the negatives, any normal bloke going thru uni can expect to come out with 25k worth of debt what's an extra 70k on top of that? Most Doctors can expect to come out of learning with over 100k worth of debt yet not all of them are from India yet! Go for it! If your involved in what you love I'm sure you won't regret anything - you can only regret what you DON'T DO!
but aren't uni fees per year about £3000?
My mate at Bournemouth Uni gets through £3000 every term.

Out of interest, are you getting funding for the majority of the flight training course from your uni?

Also I would echo what CB has mentioned and emphasise the importance of being realistic about employment and the state of the market etc. Know one really knows how the industry will go over the next 3 years.. who knows, there may be an upturn...... or it may just stagnate for 1/2 a decade...

The course is irrelevant. The costs are still the same.

And your friends are giving you money to go to uni? :hrmm:

Well, I don't know if it's a cultural thing or not, but I wouldn't expect much at all from them (at least, not much toward near enough £100,000 worth of debt lol).

I just think you need to be a bit more realistic, because...being blunt here, the worst case scenario is that you don't get a job after finishing your Cabair course.

And that could go either of these two ways

1. You give up and have wasted near enough £100k
2. You will keep chasing the dream and could spend stupid amounts of money. There are people on PPRuNe who have spent far more than £100k and still have no job.

Not positions you would like to find yourself in I'm sure.

Hence why I keep telling people to get a CDL. I may sound like a biased broken record, but investing 4K and going to school for 3 weeks to make ~50K in the first year sounds more appealing than spending ~100+K and not even be guaranteed a job.

A few pilots end up as truck drivers anyway. :hrmm:

That's not really an option if you're wanting to go to school though is it?

You can always get a CDL depending on how old you are. You don't need to go to a driving school to pick up a CDL either, but you kinda need a truck to take the road test, parking test, and PTI which the school provides. It's literally the best way to make a decent living while going to school.

Granted you can make some money after you become a CFI, but between now and then you still need a income, and McDonalds won't cut it.

Yeah but Flying Pie (I assume), was talking about people who want to get a proper degree.

Ironic considering the OP is doing Pilot Studies...(must resist urge to rant) :hrmm:

Well, you can do the driving school part time during the weekends also. The better way to go would be to get the CDL first and then start the degree, that way you'll have a decent fallback and a proper paying job to start with so you won't fold in the 2nd year.

CDL = Commercial Drivers License.

It may be called something different in the UK, but the license allows you to drive lorry's, buses, etc. I'm not suggesting that you go into a different field, but I'm giving you an idea on a good backup without adding another ~50K in student loans for a degree you'll never use.

Well, I think it's about time you you really shape up and work towards it, didn't you get C's in your AS level?  University is not going to be an easy ride if that's how you've been performing.

Not putting you down, just showing you that by meagerly completing the course doesn't mean you're going to be an ATPL immediately, only the best special ones with lots of experience are chosen.

A levels are needed to be a pilot, in terms of the selection process. You won't be the only person fighting for a job, so it's good to have them , because they'll distinguish you from everyone else.

What I meant was, it would be sort of difficult to attend class 4-5 days a week if you're on the road.

Yeah it would be, but not all CDL jobs are OTR. :hrmm:

You aren't obligated to solely tractor trailers when you get a class A, as you can drive anything under that also, such as garbage trucks, dump trucks, construction heavy equipment, buses, taxi cabs, pushback tugs, etc, etc.

Come so far? According to your sig you've only done one hour. CDL gig is realy good if yoi don't mind being away from home a lot...like a pilot is.

This CDL stuff is irrelevant, it does not exist in the UK. There is PGV's and HGV's as well as others, the ability to gain a single all encompassing license does not exist.
