The US Air Force launched a search operation last night after one of its Lockheed Martin F-22 fighters failed to return to its base following a training mission.

“An air force F-22 assigned to the 3rd Wing at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson lost contact with air traffic control at 7:40pm Alaska time today while on a routine training mission," the USAF says in a brief statement.

The service confirms that “a search is underway", and says: “more information will be released as it becomes available".

News of the missing Raptor comes just months after a C-17 strategic transport from the USAF's 3rd Wing crashed at Elmendorf-Richardson AFB, killing all four crew members.

Did the pilot steal the a/c?? hehe..
That is such a loss, millions in cash, and the life of a pilot, which is priceless... (not as much as the a/c to the military)!!

Doesn't sound too good. :hrmm:   If he ejected, I'm assuming they would know that be some sort of beacon?

You really think the military doesn't care as much for the pilot as they do for the plain?  :hrmm:

Don't know why everyone always has these assumptions. They're not that heartless.

Well there goes $230 million dollars.  Hopefully the pilot is alive.

There's still no sign of wreckage anywhere, which is strange..if this happened at night, a fire should have been obvious.

Chances are there wouldn't be a fire if it crashed into the sea.

Anybody think the craft might have ended up in the water?  Hope for the best for the pilot!
Edit: LA BOS got to it before me  :hrmm:

This crash happened in the middle of a wooded area in Alaska.

I'm sure the Air Force's investment in a fighter pilot might even rival that cost!

Where are you getting that from?  You do know Alaska is surrounded by quite a bit of water, especially where the AFB is.

I hope they find it. The bright side is that it didn't crash into a home.

I'm not sure about the plain, but I bet they'd be worried for the plane as well. :P

Toby, I was thinking along the lines of "What the heck does he mean by 'This crash happened in the middle of a wooded area in Alaska.', Alaska is an all wooded area. Way to narrow it down, Nick." :hrmm:

You do know Alaska is bigger than Texas, right?

The search area is southest of Cantwell, on the east side of the national park and about 150 miles north of Anchorage.

Actually it's quite the opposite. The most visible aspect from a fire at distance is it's smoke, and smoke is almost impossible to see at night especially if it's pitch-black.

The links in the OP never said where the plane lost contact, thanks for clearing up where the aicraft might supposedly have gone down.  And I got no idea why you threw Texas in here...of course Alaska is larger!

Well, he said 'Alaska has water all around it', which made me think the thought Alaska was some small piece of land. :hrmm:

Alaska is mainly surrounded by water. So is the continent of North America for that matter.

My point was that a land surrounded by water does nothing to suggest it's size.
