Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Microsoft Image Composite Editor - Microsoft Image Composite Editor is an advanced panoramic image stitcher. Given a set of overlapping photographs of a scene shot from a single camera location, the application creates a high-resolution panorama that seamlessly combines the original images.

No.

Yes. Both of the suggestions are very good , especially the second one.

^ I like ArcSoft's panorama software better, but well I guess you can then take into consideration that it's payware so...

I'd stay away from Microsoft's offerings now. It was good, it's become a poor choice now.

Can't speak for the others, mate, but I can recommend a few things. I like to run either the free or paid version of Avast! (With some restrictions if you go with the latter option!), Malwarebytes AntiMalware Pro - It costs $24.95 AUD for digital delivery - It's well worth the money. I also run something called Comodo Firewall. It's fairly light but not too light. Out of the box it'll block most things but you'll want to get into the nit and grit of it. Fortunately you have their support forums to rely on for any questions - It's likely anything you don't understand has been explained via another person's question before. All three (Avast! Free but not Malwarevbytes AntiMalware Free) monitor your registry under XP to 8.1 and will hold anything making changes outside of how Windows normally lets an actual installer work.

Example: Would work fine with an installer for VLC, but would place a hold on anything attempting to make a registry edit outside of how normally compiled programs execute under the Windows environment. This applies to Comodo more than the others.

In any case if you find it frustrating to configure or understand, the following guide made available is wonderful to refer to:
