Oh yeah, 9:00PM UK time. :hrmm:

But still, most people go places on Friday evenings.

And there aren't any events today. :hrmm:

I have now joined vatsim  :hrmm: I have also now downloaded the sid/star charts and other charts for EGCC and at some point this week I will be buying a headset, so getting closer to making my first online flight.  :hrmm:

We (Or atleast I) don't pause.. I PM the controller or if the frequency is quite I'll announce that I have to leave for a few minutes. It's always ok :hrmm:

VATSIM is very good and I have seen improvements in it since I joined on 07'. I will not fly offline any more, regardless of the type of flight.

I tried vatsim for the first time the other day and there were a few small issues that needed to be sorted out but it seemed pretty fun indeed. Although I still think I'll play offline from time to time, when there aren't many controllers on VATSIM or when I'm testing out/practicing stuff. Also AI has a lot more traffic from diverse airlines. Offline you often cross other planes close by with 1000ft seperation, I don't see that happening often on VATSIM, while the people are real the world does seem a little stale of population when you're not near busy airports IMO, so both offline and online have their pro's and cons.

I guess you can keep AI enabled while on VATSIM to see planes going about everywhere but that'd be more for decoration than anything else since other people and controllers can't see your AI flying around in you FS. :hrmm:

VATSIM rules clearly prohibit pausing the flight unless you have permission from the controller. Likewise with using time compression. If you have to leave for more than 30 minutes (most controllers won't give you clearance to leave for more than 5 minutes), the rules state to sign off the server. Another alternative is to fly VFR, but you'll need to comply with VFR regulations, including VFR RVSM.

I only flown once but from what I gather, with Vatspy it's easy to see what areas are controller and if you fly in uncontrolled airspace you can easily slip up from your computer without anyone ever knowing about it.

In controlled airspace it's harder, you can get frequency changed etc. During approach it's nearly impossible.

I don't know why, but the forum highlights the most random words in green to look them up in the dictionary, like "computer", "online", etc.

Ok a bit of an update.  :hrmm:

I have managed to connect to the vatsim servers at a few airports over the weekend. To be honest Manchester EGCC yesterday was pretty quiet, there was hardly any traffic ? So I thought right ok lets go over the pond to America, park up at a gate and see what its about. So first port of call was Boston KBOS, Only 1 aircraft parked at the gate and not much coming in to land. So off I went to JFK, a few more aircraft on the ground and a few taking off, but really not that many. So off I went to KORD and that was pretty much dead.

I was expecting to see much more than this to be honest guys ? or did I just connect at a quiet period ?

The connection to KORD, KJFK and KBOS was within the last 40 min.

Ian.

It's pretty much like that, except on certain events like CTP. If you download servinfo, you can find out exactly who's online and where (both ATC and pilots) without even loading into the server.

Yeah it can be a little hard work but as THBatman8 says, get servinfo or vatspy and that helps to find Airports that are staffed and busy, Germany tends to be regularly staffed!
