Why are you buying a SLI mobo and a ATI vid card?

With that kind of money to spend, I would lean towards the Nvidia 7900 series which will be coming out any time now.  Initial reports indicate they run very cool at 50c load due to the new 90nm architecture (as opposed to the 7800s 120nm).

I have a reliable source telling me the 7900GTX scores 11k 3dmark05 and 6.5k in 3dmark06.

(and honestly, the 110w power consumption of the X1900 shocked me when I did some research for TechnicolorYawn's thread.)

Edit: I do think the 3700+ is a tad underpowered for the highest end graphics card - It's better matched with a X1800/7900GT (I heard it has a lower RRP than a 7800GT :D )  in my opinion.

Edit again: I researched your old ASUS motherboard and it's PCI-E.  Therefore I'll assume your X850 is PCI-E.  I say keep it and replace it with a DX10 card later.

1. He's had persistant problems which his current rig which he has been unable to solve.
2. Fed up and rather try a new build.
3. Therefore need to sell current parts while they are still worth something.

(I have to wait 'till summer to format this CPU-surge problem laptop.  I'm a litle worked up on this minor problem so I'd be rather irritated if I was in his position.)

He got it absolutely right!
So if that AMD 3700 is a bit underpowered for X1900XT,
What CPU do you think will do fine for that card and will it work with Asus A8N-SLI mo-bo? Thanks!

I just think to get ever juice out of a card that high-end, you might be in dualcore territory 3800+ to 4200+ish.

Another option is to get a single core Opteron 148 and push it to 2.8ghz (like Neil and Mul).

Is there anything wrong with using SLI mobo and ATI video card at together? Cause I am not sure why you mentioned that :D

Well...what's the point of splashing out extra bucks for a SLI version instead of getting the non-SLI?

EDIT: It's OUT! :D  For US$499, the below link is a much, much, much MUCH better buy than a X1900!

Ok, I just bought

AMD Athlon64 3700+ S939 (San Diego)
Asus A8N-SLI
Kingston 2GB PC-3200 DDR
ATI Radeon X1800XT Crossfire
460Watts Enermax Powe Supply

And Guess what? The computer doesn't boot up. I turn it on, and everything turns on, but there is no no post/no video/no beeps,...I can't even get into BIOS. I tried unplugging everything and plugging it back but that didn't help either. I tried running the system with my older X850XT but there would still be no post/no video/no beeps. I run out of ideas...Can anyone please help me? :D

Well, I tightened the mo-bo but not too tight because that can cause it not to boot up properly.
I have tried pretty much everything I could possibly think of but still no luck? Is there any chance it is just a defected mo-bo? Because I tried running the computer without RAM, and even CPU and thee would still be no post/no video/no beeps. I also checked the battery and all power supply cables. Nothing!! :D….Defected mo-bo maybe? Or could be a defected CPU?

hmm.. you bought 2 X1800XTs in a SLi mobo? or you bought a Crossfire edition X1800? If so.. return it, and buy a regular X1800XT.

if it doesnt start up with X850, get the mobo out of the case.

I think it's a good choice to get an SLI mobo with whatever graphics card, because he can later just upgrade to 2x 7900GTX or whatever. The newer 8800GTX and its equivalent from ATI will most likely wipe the floor with the present generation graphics cards, so it's good to be future proof.

Ok people, you'll be amazed by this: I tied everything you guys suggested and still…No luck, so I went to the store I bought that mo-bo from and exchanged it for the same one (Asus A8N-SLI). Came back home, installed everything and there was still no post/no video/no beeps. Tried taking it out of the case…still no post/no video/no beeps. Tried diff Video card…still no post/no video/no beeps. Now this is getting completely ridiculous and unacceptable!!! This is what I am thinking of now:

   1.
Could it be that my Sapphire ATI Radeon X1800XT Crossfire is just not compatible with the board and causes it to get damaged?

   2.
Could it be that I don't have enough power? ATI Radeon X1800XT Crossfire needs at least 450watts of power and I have 460. (I am not sure if this helps but you know the addition power slot at the edge of all new ATI video cards? There is a red light whenever the card is active/running. Is it supposed to be red or is it a warning light that something isn't right with the video card, power usage or the setup?

  3.
Is this motherboard (Asus A8N-SLI) even compatible with my video card (ATI Radeon X1800XT Crossfire) or any other ATI cards?

Please let me know what you think! I really appreciate!

I heard that a Crossfire edition X1800 (or any card) will not function without a slave card.  Therefore, return it and get a standard version.

If your mobo is not grounded and to the backplate, and you aren't getting any beeps or post then either your PSU can't get it done or your CPU is bad. Mobo self checks the CPU first (usually).

Would a Asus A8R-MVP be a good choice? I just need a mo-bo that won't be giving random blue screens, crashes, freezing or any other weird issues I have been experiencing with my previous rig. I returned my 2nd mo-bo so I need to know if that motherboard is good and stable. Thanks!

My motherboard was placed against the case in my previous installs. Do you think that caused the problem or something?

Yes, you indeed forgot to screw in the dreaded brass screws I was talking about.

The brass scres go first into the case.  Then the motherboard is placed on top of the brass screws where you screw the ordinary screws into the brass ones.

Edit:  What was I talking about?  The brass screws go into the case... :D
