Mhmm Matt93's on the right lines. As far as the fan goes, it will only spin if the CPU's getting a little warm. These CPU's don't run awfully hot and for that reason the fan doesn't spin at times.

Maybe I'm not understanding the question. Does the system function fine other than the fact that the CPU fan doesn't spin occasionally?

Right ok. Any chance you're using a wireless keyboard or mouse? What are your full system specs?

i don't have a graphics card yet so i can't plug in monitor, would that have an effect? my full system spec's are

E6600

Gamexstream OCZ 600W psu
Graphics card yet to be decided.

  If you don't have an integrated GPU, it will beep without a GPU, yes.

When the CPU fan makes you nervous, you can sure disable fan control in the BIOS (check the manual). Then it'll run always at 100% - if the noise don't bother you...

thanks everyone so far, i have heard that the processor can burn if the fan isn't running, that's why i was worried. Any suggestions for a graphics card? my budget is about €150

Ah. You didn't have a graphics card

I wouldn't worry about burning the CPU. CPU's nowadays are pretty idiot proof. Not saying you should try it but hypothetically if you ran this cpu fanless and played a game, when the CPU hits 80*c it'll begin to throttle back clockspeed till cpu temperature stablises. As well as that, most motherboards have a preset auto shutdown on the system if the cpu gets too hot. Finally, chances are the system would show signs of instability and crash before the CPU even gets a chance to fry

With 150 EUR for a graphics card:

Gainward GeForce 7600GT 256mb GDDR3 153 EUR

Hey Mul, I thought that c2d processors were not supposed to run over 60*C?

sometimes it restarts and sometimes it freezes and does nothing while loading setup files. would it be a setting in the BIOS?

Do a through format on the drive and try it again. However never turn the PC when you think it's "hanging" this can ruin an entire Xp install and will make odd bugs appear in future programs. That and do not force quit the SP2 install. It takes what seems to be a 15 minute break during the clean up.

As for the problem, are the power and data cables seated all the way

that's the part prior to xp installation.

Is this a HDD you've used with your old pc or is it a new one?

Oh and if this is your first format select the NTFS system.
