Righteo. Boot with the XP CD. Press Enter to begin setup.

Press F8 to say you understand terms and conditions. It'll detect a current installation of windows. Press Enter to continue setup. It'll show you a partition. Choose to delete it. Confirm the deletion. Then choose to create a partition. Once it's done that, choose to run "Format with NTFS Full Format" and not the quick one. This will take a while. Once done, the pc will restart and XP installation commences

but i can't get that far, it gets stuck at "Setup is starting Windows"

does it matter that i have the disc drive and the hard drive on the same IDE channel? Would it work if I bought an SATA hard drive?

How long have you waited? That part can take as long as 5-10minutes.

Could you on into Advanced CMOS Setup in BIOS and confirm that Hard Disk Drive is on Primary IDE and your optical drive is Secondary?

the hard drive is on IDE Channel 4 Master and the disc drive is on IDE Channel 4 Slave. the cpu temp is around 70C and the system temp is around 40C, ar they safe temperatures?

That shouldn't cause problems. To be frank I'm not entirely sure what's going on.

It maybe worth trying a SATA drive incase having the HDD and Optical drive on the same line is causing issues but I'm not entirely sure. =/

I wouldn't imagine that being the issue. The majority of 64bit systems being shipped out don't use XP x64 edition.

When i attempted to install XP again, when it said "Setup is Starting Windows" it went to a screen that said:

BAD_POOL_CALLER

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x000000C2 (0x0000007, 0x00000CD4, 0x00000000, 0xE100F5C8

any ideas on how to fix this? I'm sure that's why XP isn't installing

also, the temperature of the CPU is around 70 degrees, is that to hot?

It does sound to me as though the Hard Drive and Optical drive on one ribbon cable is the cause of your problems. Unfortunately I realise there's only one IDE port on 965P based motherboards.

Yes that CPU temperature is definitely too high. Have you connected the fan on the heatsink to the CPU_FAN header? Also ensure the heatsink is secure.

No, the compound preapplied to the heatsink works fine on it's own. No need for any more.

in the BIOS, there is a fan speed control method, the options are intel QST, Legacy and disable. what should i pick? auto is also there but the cpu is too hot and i think that may be the problem.

I believe if you disable it the fan goes on and on. What I don't understand is why didn't you get a anew hard drive too? You won't be needing a floppy would you? Just take out the floppy unless your cdrom is IDE too.

What does a Floppy drive have to do with this? He's got a cd drive and a hard disk drive. Both are IDE and he has them both connected on the same ribbon cable. I suspect this is the problem, but doing this shouldn't usually cause a problem.

I'd set fan control to disable and let it run full RPM. Then once XP has installed (well when we get it sorted) let software control fan speeds.

This might sound stupid but you did put the fan in the right direction right?
Seeing as you are using a gigabyte board well this actuall affects all boards IMO disable the speed control. Which will cause the fan to not stop or slow down depending on CPU temps. If not open the case just a bit such as a half inch or an inch and let the hot air escape more easily. Just doing that helps my video card cool down from 85 degrees Celsius to 48 in a matter of minutes.

it increased the system fan and didn't increase the cpu fan, should i plug the cpu fan into the system fan port on the motherboard?
