Forty-nine people reportedly died when an aircraft identified as a Continental Airlines flight crashed into a house in Clarence Center shortly after 10 p.m. tonight, starting a huge fire which poured thick smoke throughout the hamlet.

Unconfirmed reports from a source at Buffalo Niagara International Airport said that the dead included 44 passengers, four crew members and a person on the ground.

County Executive Chris Collins said that there may have been as many as 50 people aboard the plane and crew members had reported mechanical problems as they approached Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Several injured people were taken from the scene to Erie County Medical Center for treatment.

Television reports said the crash site was 6050 Long St., not far from the Clarence Center Fire Hall on Clarence Center Road. Police said that one man was in the residence at the time of the crash.

RIP.  :hrmm:

RIP to all. This is why pilots want better pay. Someone goes wrong, and this is what happens.

Well be smart, wait for the NTSB to say what brought the aircraft down before blaming it on the aircraft.

This is not good at all, thoughts and prayers go out to the family/friends of those lost.

I just flew into Rochester, NY tonight an hour before that crash, we flew directly over BUF. Weather was low clouds/vis, gusty with snow, our RVR was 4000 in ROC.

According to MSNBC planes travel at 300-400 mph on approach... The extreme lack of knowledge that the press has always amazes me.

It's really sad listening to the ATC tapes...

The female first officer sounded really stressed and rushed during her last transmission... even worse was when Cactus asked if they found Colgan, with a reply that it was down. Then he flew over the crash sight and asked if he knew what was going on in a really dismal voice...

At least I have aviation knowledge... Have you listened to CNN tonight? Apparently airplanes are objects sent from the Super Devil to destroy the planet.  :hrmm:

Where were you able to hear the ATC tapes?

They believe all 48 people on board have been killed. 1 person on the ground was also killed. There have been unconfirmed reports of an engine fire seen before the crash. Sadly, it is announced that there are official reports that there have been no survivors.

The Q400 has been doing very well, and it will be interesting how this will affect the reliability. The landing gear problems have been the most common, but we'll have to see what the NTSB comes up with.

Here is the flight on Flight Aware....

http://flightaware.c.../flight/CJC3407

According to the information, the plane was at 5,300ft. in the last minute of the flight.

This is a very sad night. I wish all the victim's families cope with this as best as possible, and that the cause of this crash is found as quickly as possible.

Skip to about 15 minutes in, then listen from there to end:

I just listened to the ATC. Very sad, and near the end, the ATC controller warns of former reports of "fluctuations in the localizer."
