1 year, thats it. Year 2 pay. And we're in contract negotiations to get more. And even though $40k is decent, its still a rough wage to live on.
One year after working for the company or since you had your CPL?

After 1 year of working in the aviation field. 2 years after graduating.

Not bad. You must have been one of the lucky ones.

Persistence and ambitious only gets you so far in life. Life is a gamble. Getting a CPL does not guarantee you a well paying job no matter how persistent and ambitious you are. The majority of pilots with his experience level are lucky to make 20k a year.

Most regionals pay about or at least $20k to start. Persistence and ambition does only take you so far. When I interviewed, I had the lowest time out people there, no 121, 135, or commercial experience, and no jet time but yet I was the only one who got the job.

Unless people cut their own hair at home?

Is that like getting your own PPL/CPL and not needing an airline pilot?  :hrmm:

Also if you're a pilot and you make a small mistake you can come under heavy fire. If you fall asleep in your office probably no one would ever notice.

Thank you sir. I cannot stand the "If you set your mind to it, you can accomplish anything" comments. The real world doesn't work like that. If you're still in school and have that mindset, you're going to be in for a rude awakening.

BTW, I think even the airliners changed who they look for in employees. Experience doesn't matter that much anymore. Even college doesn't matter much to some employers. What matters is your physique, etiquette, and demeanor.

Depends on where you live of course. I make roughly 30k a year, and I live comfortably :hrmm:. Vegas has a cheap cost of living, if I was making 40k a year I'd probably have my ppl by now lol.

I'm originally from San Fran, so if I wanted to live off 30k there, I'd be living in a tiny studio apartment....lol.

I think he lives in the Detroit area, which is relatively cheap.

Ah, I've never been or know the area at all so I wouldn't know. Still, a decent wage :hrmm:

I think so too, but in a way I agree with him. My current job pays the same and I also think it deserves more. 40k actually isn't a whole lot. Not when you figure in taxes, auto payments, and everything else. When you get a apartment, 99% of them want you to make at least 3 times what the monthly rent is, or you won't get the lease.

How many obese airline pilots do you know? You'll obviously have to keep and hold an aviation medical for the duration of your career, so he is making a valid point. Airlines expect their crew to maintain a neat and tidy appearance as well.

I've seen a few in my travels.  But just because someone isn't obese, doesn't mean they are healthy.  Regardless, in respect to the airline industry and other workplaces where medical condition matters, yes, that is something an employer will consider.  They don't want to hire someone just to have them fail a medical and need a replacement.

Education and experience still plays a HUGE role in hiring and it goes both ways. For example, an old school Delta instructor jumpseating the other day said that Delta would look at me with 2000 TT with no PIC turbine time so they could "mold" me into the Delta way. More and more airlines are raising their minimums due to H.R. 5900. I actually got an email from my company the other day that stated that they need to get everyones total times so they can be compliant with the law in August 2013. In other words, they are giving all current SIC typed pilots an ATP ride on their next AQP session (mine will be NEXT April). So this way I will get my ME ATP for free, paid for by the company.

So hypothetically, let's say i retired from a career of flyin in the USAF and decided to try out for an airline, would the airlines hire me as the same level as a person with no flight experience or would I move up the "airline ladder" relatively fast?
