a/c out of maintenance checks at small outstations.. for example a taxi out, you have a week to replace it..etc etc
fuel saturation issues, as everyone is going to want 2 - 3 hours hold fuel, there just isnt enough
crew issues, crews have been away for nearly a week, the HK/OZ crews, nearly 2, so they will all be on 4 days off.. you have crew without clothes, phone chargers, personal medication as they have been away for a week not 1 night...etc etc
crews at the moment are on standby at home, and you have to give them days off too, as they have been on standby all last week...
All the flights when they do start moving again are going to be full to the brim, so you need a full complement, which we don't have.
the list goes on and on, its not all plain sailing as you may think

and you wait when the press see the new maps, and publish them the public will then want to know why such huge airspace's have previously been closed
then traffic will start flying due to commercial pressure, someone will have a engine vibration, bird strike or similar. the a/c will divert, the spotters will get all excited and all media madness will break loose.. you watch

Care to elaborate? I'd rather ground flights than risk total engine blowouts & risk thousands of lives up there. Plus, how are they losing money? It's not like they're burning their fuel sitting at the tarmac..
Well, at the time that I wrote that I was not thinking about how the airlines are reimbursing their customers & also that the airlines might also be paying for hotel rooms, etc. Thanks guys for clearing that up; was not thinking about all the ground costs & also the opportunity cost the airlines are missing out on.
I sure hope all the airliners that do take to the skies today make it to their destinations without any incidents, seems as if air travel has slowly been picking up again. (Although I'm not too sure if I'd fly just yet!)

" Well, if you can't afford to travel.. then don't travel. I have no pity for the fools who travel with no emergency funds... it's pure foolishness at it's best.
I know not everyone can afford a 5000 pound taxi ride like John Cleese but trains and buses are not that expensive... and the amount of warning passengers had could have given them enough time to find alternate modes of transportation (except those flying long distances) "
you are well out of order saying that , alot of these people do have extra funds but they are being ripped off during this crisis have you ever been in a crisis like this? think before you open your mouth , do you know how much it cost to feed a family per day and pay extra for your hotel room seeing as some of these scum bags are putting up their prices , its well and good saying trains and buses are not expensive sat on your where ever you maybe when you wrote the above , it soon amounts up when you are using various buses and trains and taxis when there are familys involved have a heart will ya

maybe reason being.. its an special VFR/IFR flight hence having being filed as a "z" flight ruling being to "get round" the new nofly zone issues...
its also IFP ERROUTRAD, which means its RAD exempt I think ,which they brought in as i was leaving the office this morning...
but Im sure the 18 year old ICT students experts and professionals can explain that one...

The situation regarding the volcanic eruption in Iceland remains dynamic and the latest information from the Met Office shows that the situation will continue to be variable.
Based on the latest Met Office information, part of Scottish and Northern Irish airspace including Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh airports will continue to be available from 1900 today to 0100 tomorrow, Wednesday 21 April, and also south to Newcastle Airport. Glasgow and Teesside airports will additionally become available in this time period. Restrictions will remain in place over the rest of UK airspace below 20,000ft.
Flights above the ash cloud are now permitted in the UK; between 1900 today and 0100 tomorrow, this will enable aircraft movements above 20,000ft in UK airspace.
We will continue to monitor Met Office information and the situation is likely to change during the course of the day. We will make a further statement at approximately 2100 today.
NATS is maintaining close dialogue with the Met Office and with the UK's safety regulator, the CAA, in respect of the international civil aviation policy we follow in applying restrictions to use of airspace.
We are working closely with Government, airports and airlines, and airframe and aero engine manufacturers to get a better understanding of the effects of the ash cloud and to seek solutions.
