if planes fly with pax now i won't be worried at all. there will be indications before a engine packs up cause of the ash as there is less of it in the air than what went through BA9. and even if there is an emergency, there are many airports within 50nm in either direction, definitely enough of a glide if needs be

50 miles is a long way when you have no engine power

That's more than enough depending on the planes altitude. The 747-400 (for example) has a 17:1 glide ratio, meaning for every 1 foot of altitude loss the plane can move forward 17 feet without dropping airspeed.

Silly geese, now you know how Los Angeles feels every october when our hills catch fire and screw over LAX for two weeks at a time.

So far.

Wow. What a complete mess. Would have been better off staying where they were.
Not that bad for pax though, as long as they can get to a northern European port they cant get back to Britain.

Disagree with you mate, the ferrys and trains are quite booked up really. SNN might not be bad but ATH, BCN, or NCE aren't really convenient at all.
